What do we feed?

On Brasic Farms, we feed our dogs “Fromm Family Classics: Adult” and our Puppies “Fromm Gold Puppy” ((include pictures of the bags. The adult is silver and purple and the puppy is pink)). These are a 4 star and 4 ½ star brand of food and come very highly recommended by our trainers. They are a great food for the price, we buy ours at the local Pet Supplies Plus and we also order from an online food delivery server called Chewy.

Veterinarian Sold Food

Brands that are sold in veterinarians are often marketed as premium foods. However, the ingredients in these foods actually put them on par with the brands that you buy in the grocery store. These formulas, made by large conglomerate food manufacturers, derive far more protein from grains or grain by-product sources such as corn gluten meal, brewer's rice, and wheat, than from healthy meat sources. They also contain poultry by-product, which consists of the leftovers unfit for human consumption, like feet, beaks, undeveloped eggs, and intestines; everything but clean meat. It's a cheap, low quality source of protein that is far less digestible than clean chicken meal. These ingredients are a tell-tale sign of poor quality food. Although the formulas may contain a few specialized ingredients to position them as a “special diet” for health conditions such as joint support, urinary tract health, etc., a better way to treat these conditions is with a truly healthy food and one or more daily supplements.

How Do I pick a good brand of food?

Dogs are designed by nature to eat protein from meat sources, not grains, wheats, soy or starches. The high grain/filler content of many pet foods is a primary contributor to the growing obesity and allergy problems in pets. Companies will use ingredients like White Potatoes (Sweet potatoes are ok) Corn (syrup, ground whole corn, corn meal), Wheat, Soy, Barley and Rice to add bulk to batches of dog food, but your dog does not receive any benefits from these ingredients. When reading a dog food label, it is best to use the rule of 5. The ingredients are listed in order of % weight of the total ingredients. That means that the first 5 ingredients are meat and a named meat meal, like chicken meal or lamb meal, and those 5 should be listed before any grains. Keep in mind that the meats are always listed as their weight BEFORE being cooked, so a lot of that total weight is lost in the process of making the food. For example, the first 5 ingredients of “Taste of the Wild: High Prairie Puppy” are Buffalo, lamb meal, sweet potatoes, egg product, pea protein.
